Angels of the Bible

Introduction:
This lesson is about angels. Normally we talk about angels only at Christmas but they are mentioned in many other parts of the Bible. I agree that our focus should remain on God, after all He created angels but angels are real and are God's messengers. They are part of the Bible and children are often curious by these "large, white, winged creatures". There are evil angels as well, demons, but we will focus primarily on God's angels and their purpose.
The message:
All Grades: Angels are messengers from
God.
I've kept this message the same for all ages. The message is simple: Angels are messengers from God. For the older grades you may want to explain that God doesn't need angels but he chooses to use them, just like he uses us to spread his word. Although, angels are God's special helpers with special abilities.
Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson. Send the Angels of the Bible Take Home Sheet home to encourage parents to reiterate the message during the week. It includes a poster at the bottom that the children can color and hang on their wall or refrigerator.

Some people like to do craft time first and story time second and some like to switch it around. I like the first option, myself.
Always consider offering Angel Coloring Pages or Angel Printables for further ideas for children who aren't interested in participating in the group activity (or if you get done the group activities very quickly and need something to fill in the spare time). Everyone has a need for "alone time" once in awhile. Also, sending home the coloring pages with the Take Home sheet provides parents with much needed help in reinforcing the lessons. You can make a nice little booklet each week with the Take Home Sheet on top -- I promise that most parents will appreciate the effort!

| Welcome! Receive name tags. Have the children use crayons, markers, yarn, feathers and whatever other materials (such as sparkle glue) that you have available to personalize their name tag. Sing the Learning our Names song |

Craft time! Preschool thru Grade 1: Make the Cone Angel. Encourage the children to put it in their room and to think about God and angels watching over them when they are frightened about something. Grade 2 and 3: Make the Spoon Angel Paper Craft. Encourage the children to hang it on the fridge at home or hang it next to their bed. Note: Keep in mind there are various angel crafts. You may choose to do an angel for the particular time of year or a different one depending on the craft supplies you have handy at the time. |

Bible Story/Song Time: Preschool thru Grade 1: Read The Story of the Angels of the Bible (or read from your own store bought children's bible). Grades 2 and 3: It's tough to know when it's the right time to start readings from the Bible, but if the children have been read a children's version of the story in the past, I believe this is a good age to introduce the King James (or your preferred) bible reading. All Grades: Sing or recite the Three Little Angels. |

Closing: Preschool thru Grade 1: depending on the time remaining ask the children if they believe angels are real. Ask if they should pray to God or pray to angels and who is more important. What kind of things do they think angels do to help God? (it might be fun to here their answer *grin*) Grade 2 and 3: depending on the time remaining ask the children what they think angels do. How can they be an "angel" to someone else? What can we learn from angels? (they do things without recognition, their close relationship to God, they're God's messengers, etc.)
