Mother's Day (Honor your Mother)

Introduction:
Mother's Day is all about honoring our mothers and showing them how much we love them. Mother's day isn't necessarily mentioned in the Bible but it does mention how we should treat our mothers, and it seems that children need a good reminder of this at least once a year. Don't forget to be sensitive to those children who for some reason don't have a mother and encourage them to look to another female figure they are close too. And take the opportunity to tell them about their Heavenly Father who does love them and care for their needs.

I've split this message into two separate ones depending on the age level. For all ages the message is, respect and bless your mother. Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson.
Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson. Send the Mother's Day Take Home Sheet home with the children to encourage parents to reiterate the message during the week. It includes a poster at the bottom that the children can color and hang on their wall or refrigerator.

Some people like to do craft time first and story time second and some like to switch it around. I like the first option, myself.
Always consider offering the Coloring pages or the My Mommy minibook for children who aren't interested in participating in the group activity (or if you get done the group activities very quickly and need something to fill in the spare time). Everyone has a need for "alone time" once in awhile. Also, sending home the coloring pages or mini book with the Take Home sheet provides parents with much needed help in reinforcing the lessons. You can make a nice little booklet each week with the take home sheet on top -- I promise that most parents will appreciate the effort!

| Welcome! Receive name tags. Have the children use crayons, markers, yarn and whatever other materials (such as wiggly eyes or buttons) you have available to personalize their name tag. Also allow them to draw something they are good at on their name tag (soccer ball, piano notes, playing with a sibling or parent, etc.). Sing the Learning our Names song |

Bible Story Time: Preschool thru Grade 1: Read About Mother's Day (or read from your own store bought children's bible). Grade 2 and 3: it's tough to know when it's the right time to start readings from the Bible, but I believe this is a good age to introduce the King James (or your preferred) bible reading. |
10 minutes | Our Mini Book or other Printables can be distributed to the children so can color during the story or at home this week. Print the pages, staple them together in order and let the kids know when to turn the page. The handouts can be taken home to color in. |

Closing: Preschool thru Grade 1: depending on the time remaining, ask the children what they love about their mom. What are some things that they can do to make their mom happy? Remind them to tell their moms that they love them and to show it through their actions. Grade 2 and 3: depending on the time remaining, ask the children why is God happy when we obey our moms? (he loves them too and wants us to obey) What are some ways that they can make their mom happy? Remind them to tell their moms that they love them and to show it through their actions.
