Jacob and Esau

Introduction:
This next lesson is about Jacob and Esau. In this story Esau despises his birthright for a bowl of stew. He chose earthly desires over the covenant given to his grandfather (Gen.17:1-8) and by doing this was considered "godless" (Heb.12:16). Choices are important and some can have eternal repercussions. Some choices are more important than others and this lesson will help the children realize that there are consequences to choices that they make and even the smallest decision can be very important.
The message:
Preschool thru Grade 1: Our choices are important.
Grades 2 and 3: Our choices are important they can affect us and others in
the future.
I've split this message into two separate ones depending on the age level. For the younger children, the message is simple: Our choices are important. For the older children, we expand on this message and say: Our choices are so important that they can affect us and others later on.
Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson. Send the Jacob and Esau Take Home Sheet home with the children to encourage parents to reiterate the message during the week. It includes a poster at the bottom that the children can color and hang on their wall or refrigerator.

Some people like to do craft time first and story time second and some like to switch it around. I like the first option, myself.
Always consider offering the Jacob and Esau Coloring Pages for children who aren't interested in participating in the group activity (or if you get done the group activities very quickly and need something to fill in the spare time). Everyone has a need for "alone time" once in awhile. Also, sending home the mini book or coloring pages with the Take Home sheet provides parents with much needed help in reinforcing the lessons. You can make a nice little booklet each week with the Take Home Sheet on top -- I promise that most parents will appreciate the effort!

| Welcome! Receive name tags. Have the children use crayons, markers, yarn, feathers and whatever other materials (such as sparkle glue) that you have available to personalize their name tag. Sing the Learning our Names song |

Craft time! Preschool thru Grade 1: Make the Clay Bowl (pinch pot method). Jacob shared his stew with Esau in exchange for Esau's birthright. Make this fun, simple bowl with the children while reading Genesis 25. Grade 2 and 3: Make the Clay Bowl (coil pot method) or use the Stone Soup section where there are many options. The poem/coloring page and the felt board/puppets might work out quite well with this lesson. If you really feel energetic you could even make stone soup with the class. |

Bible Story Time: Preschool thru Grade 1: Read The Story of Jacob and Esau (or read from your own store bought children's bible). Grades 2 and 3: It's tough to know when it's the right time to start readings from the Bible, but if the children have been read a children's version of the story in the past, I believe this is a good age to introduce the King James (or your preferred) bible reading. |

Closing: Preschool thru Grade 1: depending on the time remaining ask the children what happens when they make a wrong choice? What happens when they make the right choice? We all make wrong choices sometimes. It's important that when we do make a bad choice to remember that and try to make a better choice next time. Make choices that God would want you to make. Grade 2 and 3: depending on the time remaining ask the children what happens when they make the wrong choice/right choice? Is it easy to make the right choice all the time? It won't be easy to make the right choice all the time and sometimes you'll make the wrong choice. Ask God for forgiveness when you do and try to make a better choice next time.
