Men of the Old Testament Pt4: David and Goliath

Introduction:
This next lesson is about a young boy named David. Even though he was young he knew what he could do with God's help, in fact he knew better than King Saul. God chose David because he saw his heart. A great reminder to us all that it doesn't matter what's on the outside (how we look, how old we are, our disabilities, or even how others see us). It's more important what we are like on the inside (our attitudes, our yearning to know God better, our hopes and dreams) and our relationship with God.
The message:
Preschool thru Grade 1: It doesn't matter how old you
are, God can still help you do important things.
Grades 2 and 3: God doesn't look at your appearance or age, He looks at
your heart.
I've split this message into two separate ones depending on the age level. For the younger children, the message is simple: It doesn't matter how old you are, God can still use you for important things. Reassure the children that He sees what we're like on the inside and age doesn't matter, He can help us do anything he wants us to do. For the older children, we expand on this message and say: God looks at the heart. A lot of times they might think they can "get away with stuff" because they're young. It's important to remember that God only sees what's on the inside and no matter what age God can use us.
Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson. Send the David and Goliath Take Home Sheet home with the children to encourage parents to reiterate the message during the week. It includes a poster at the bottom that the children can color and hang on their wall or refrigerator.

Some people like to do craft time first and story time second and some like to switch it around. I like the first option, myself.
Always consider offering the Mini Book or David and Goliath Coloring Pages for children who aren't interested in participating in the group activity (or if you get done the group activities very quickly and need something to fill in the spare time). Everyone has a need for "alone time" once in awhile. Also, sending home the mini book or coloring pages with the Take Home sheet provides parents with much needed help in reinforcing the lessons. You can make a nice little booklet each week with the Take Home Sheet on top -- I promise that most parents will appreciate the effort!

| Welcome! Receive name tags. Have the children use crayons, markers, yarn, feathers and whatever other materials (such as sparkle glue) that you have available to personalize their name tag. Sing the Learning our Names song |
10 to 15 minutes | Stone name tags, scissors (or adults can precut), crayons, markers, yarn, safety pins or tape. |
Craft time! All Grades: Make the David Bag of Stones Craft. With a younger group of kids you can use a plain paper bag instead of making your own. For the older kids you can make the paper bags from the templates at the bottom of the page. There is also the David and Goliath game with this craft if you have time. |

Bag of Stones Template. 5 flat smooth rocks per child, paint,
paint brushes, water, paper towel, black perm. marker, paper bags, or
paper, printer, crayons, scissors, glue or tape to make the template. David and Goliath Game: 5 stones from the craft or marbles, 1 large stone or marble with 'G' on it, smooth surface. |
Bible Story/Song Time: All Grades: Sing Only a Boy Named David. Preschool thru Grade 1: Read The Story of David and Goliath (or read from your own store bought children's bible). Grades 2 and 3: It's tough to know when it's the right time to start readings from the Bible, but if the children have been read a children's version of the story in the past, I believe this is a good age to introduce the King James (or your preferred) bible reading. |
10 minutes | The Mini Book or Coloring Pages can be distributed to the children so they are able to color at home, or during the story. Print the pages, staple them together in order and let the kids know when to turn the page. The handouts can be taken home to color in. |

Closing: Preschool thru Grade 1: depending on the time remaining ask the children if they feel important. No matter how old they are God thinks they're very important! With God's help they can do lots of amazing things (help someone by praying for them, help someone go to heaven, etc.) Do they think that they could be like David and not worry how big they are but believe God will help them? Grade 2 and 3: depending on the time remaining ask the children if they think they are important. Imagine someone that doesn't care about how old they are, what they look like, and only looks at the inside. Would they change the way they think or feel about others? Would they worry about their clothes or how popular they are?
