Father's Day (Honor your Father)

Introduction:
Father's Day is all about honoring our fathers and showing them how much we love them. Father's day isn't necessarily mentioned in the Bible but it does mention how we should treat our fathers, and it seems that children need a good reminder of this at least once a year. Don't forget to be sensitive to those children who have not been blessed with a loving earthly father - if appropriate, encourage them to give their gift to an important male figure in their life instead. And take the opportunity to tell them about their Heavenly Father who does love them and care for their needs.
The message:
Preschool thru Grade 1: Respect and obey your father.
Grades 2 and 3: Honor your father.
I've split this message into two separate ones depending on the age level. For the younger children, respect and obey your father. Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson. For the older children, we expand on this message and say: Honor your father.
Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson. Send the Father's Day Take Home Sheet home with the children to encourage parents to reiterate the message during the week. It includes a poster at the bottom that the children can color and hang on their wall or refrigerator.

Some people like to do craft time first and story time second and some like to switch it around. I like the first option, myself.
Always consider offering the Coloring Pages or the My Daddy minibook for children who aren't interested in participating in the group activity (or if you get done the group activities very quickly and need something to fill in the spare time). Everyone has a need for "alone time" once in awhile. Also, sending home the coloring pages or mini book with the Take Home sheet provides parents with much needed help in reinforcing the lessons. You can make a nice little booklet each week with the take home sheet on top -- I promise that most parents will appreciate the effort!

| Welcome! Receive name tags. Have the children use crayons, markers, yarn and whatever other materials (such as wiggly eyes or buttons) you have available to personalize their name tag. Also allow them to draw something they are good at on their name tag (soccer ball, piano notes, playing with a sibling or parent, etc.). Sing the Learning our Names song |

Craft time! Preschool thru Grade 1: Make the Father's
Day Paper Angel. Add a saying or Bible verse to the paper
craft by gluing a piece of paper to the hand. Or use: Grade 2 and 3: Make the Necktie Paper Craft. Write a message on the bottom section of the tie like "Who is the greatest dad in the whole world?" Then decorate the tie and knot if you want to with markers or crayons. After putting your tie together and gluing it, lift the bottom of the tie and writ the answer to your question. (You are!") Make sure this saying is covered by the tie. Don't forget to write "I love you" and their name. |

Bible Story Time: Preschool thru Grade 1: Read About Father's Day (or read from your own store bought children's bible). Grade 2 and 3: it's tough to know when it's the right time to start readings from the Bible, but I believe this is a good age to introduce the King James (or your preferred) bible reading. |
10 minutes | Our Mini Book or Coloring Pages can be distributed to the children so can color during the story or at home this week. Print the pages, staple them together in order and let the kids know when to turn the page. The handouts can be taken home to color in. |

Closing: Preschool thru Grade 1: depending on the time remaining, ask the children what they love about their dad. What are some things that they can do to make their dad happy? Remind them to tell their dads that they love them and to show it through their actions. Grade 2 and 3: depending on the time remaining, ask the children why is God happy when we obey or dads? (he loves them too and wants us to obey) What are some ways that they can make their dad happy? Remind them to tell their dads that they love them and to show it through their actions. All Grades: Sing "God Gave me my Dad" and "God Gave my Dad to me". Standard ending song: "We Love to Learn Together" |
